Local Attractions
Evanston is home to more than just the NSF Nationals! An energetic and engaging community, Evanston boasts numerous attractions, including beaches on the shores of Lake Michigan, a wide variety of restaurants, and easy access to the city of Chicago. To help NSF participants and their families enjoy the time they spend in Evanston, this page includes some destinations which may be of interest. All locations are either within walking distance of Northwestern University or are accessible via public transportation.

BEACHES
Northwestern University is very close to the Lighthouse and Clark Street beaches, located directly on Sheridan Rd. To visit the beaches, head north of Sheridan to Lincoln. Turn right onto Lincoln, which bends to the right when it meets Lake Michigan. The beach is just north of the Sports Pavilion.
CHICAGO
Downtown Chicago is just a train ride away (the ride is approximately 50 minutes long). To access public transporation from Northwestern University, turn right onto Foster St, and take the CTA Purple Line South from Foster to Howard. Switch trains at Howard to the CTA Red Line South from Howard to Jackson. The Jackson stop is at the intersection of State St. and Jackson Blvd. From this intersection...
Walk 5 blocks west on Jackson Blvd. to SEARS TOWER SKYDECK ENTRANCE (open from 10 am to 10 pm every day)
Walk 2 blocks east on Jackson Blvd. and then 4 blocks north on Michigan Avenue to the MILLENIUM PARK/GRANT PARK (outdoors)
Walk 2 blocks east on Jackson Blvd. and then 2 blocks north on Michigan Avenue to ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO (open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday)
Walk 2 blocks east on Jackson Blvd. and continue north on Michigan Avenue After crossing the bridge, you can take a 60 or 90 minute tour of Chicago with Wendella Boat Tours Or, continue on North Michigan Avenue into Chicago's high-end commerical district, the MAGNIFICENT MILE.
In addition, Chicago also has several world-renowned museums and places of academic interest, including the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science & Industry, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. Detailed directions to these locations can be found at their websites.
For those interested in a drive to Chicago to see the city's famous skyline, Lake Shore Drive is just a few miles away from Northwestern University.
Directions: Turn left onto Chicago Avenue, which becomes N. Clark Street. Turn left onto N. Ridge Avenue (US-14). Turn left onto W. Hollywood Avenue, which becomes Lake Shore Drive. Take the ramp toward 31st St., and turn right onto Lake Shore Drive.
Indian Interests
Chicago has a large population of Indians, and the Indian District of Chicago is unofficially located on West Devon Avenue. This area has a variety of Indian restaurants, stores that sell Indian garments and products - even theaters that screen films in Hindi, Tamil, Urdu and Telugu.
From Northwestern University, Devon Avenue (Indian District of Chicago) is about 15 minutes away.
Directions: Start on Sheridan Rd. Turn left onto Davis, and then left onto Chicago Avenue. Turn right onto Main St., and then left onto Ridge Ave. From Ridge Ave., turn right onto Devon Avenue, and continue west. A drive to the west end of Devon will take approximately one hour (each way).
