Encouraging Excellence in Education
North South Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Hyderabad and founded in 2004. It promotes excellence in education among economically disadvantaged students of India. North South Foundation has two major initiatives in India.

Scholarships

North South Foundation provides merit cum need based scholarships to undergraduate students entering engineering, medicine, or 3 year diploma courses. The program supports students’ academic journey and fosters their potential.

North South Foundation has provided scholarships worth Rs. 35 Crores to nearly 20,000 students in the last decade.

Assessment Driven Learning

The North South Foundation Creative Learning (NCL) Initiative offers high quality competency-based assessments aligned to the curriculum at no cost to government schools across India. The initiative uses an online platform, detailed dashboards, and a high-quality question bank to provide comprehensive feedback and support.
Over 250,000 children are registered to participate in the NCL assessments.

A Rich History

Explore our long history of milestones – small ideas turning into big impact.
  • 1989 – Foundation Established

    Foundation established by Dr. Ratnam Chitturi. The scholarship program begins with the awarding of a single scholarship, marking the start of a mission to empower underprivileged students in India.

  • 1991 – Fundraising Initiatives Begin

    Community fundraising initiatives take root. Walk/Bike-a-thons engage communities to raise funds, contributing $7,000 in support of the foundation’s mission.

  • 1993 – First Regional Contest

    The first regional spelling bee is conducted. NorthSouth’s pioneering educational contests begin, fostering academic excellence in the U.S., thanks to Dr. Murali Gavini's efforts.

  • 1999 – 1,000 Scholarships and Brain Bee Launch

    Crossed the milestone of awarding 1,000 scholarships. Launched Brain Bee for high school students. A decade of dedication culminates in scholarships for over 1,000 deserving students in India.

  • 2004 – Expansion into STEM and National Recognition

    Expanded into STEM contests, followed by Geography, Essay Writing, and Public Speaking in succession. NorthSouth alum Sai Gunturi becomes the 2003 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion, bringing national recognition. Math contests launch under the leadership of Dr. Krishnaiah and team.

  • 2008 – Spelling Bee Dominance Begins

    NorthSouth alum Sameer Mishra wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Marks the start of a 12-year streak of champions (2008–2019), putting NorthSouth on the global map.

  • 2010 – Science Contests and SAT Coaching

    Launched Science Contests and a Coaching Program for the SAT. Crossed 6,000 scholarships and 15,000 U.S. children benefited milestones.

  • 2012 – Geography Bee Success

    NorthSouth alum Rahul Nagvekar wins the National Geography Bee. Starts an 8-year streak of champions (2012–2019).

  • 2014 – 15,000 Scholarships and Universal Values

    Crossed 15,000 scholarships and 30,000 U.S. children benefited milestones. Launched the Universal Values coaching program, promoting holistic education.

  • 2019 – Changemakers Program Launch

    Introduced the Changemakers Program in collaboration with Ashoka. Empowering children to drive positive changes, with nearly 20 participants aged 10–18, and 10 parents completing the training.

  • 2020 – Resilience During COVID-19

    Continued scholarships and contests virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. Changemaking children raised $100,000 to provide laptops for 1,000 underserved students for online learning.

  • 2023 – Celebrating 30,000 Scholarships

    Celebrated over 30,000 scholarships awarded and 50,000 U.S. children benefited. This milestone solidifies NorthSouth’s legacy in empowering underprivileged youth globally.
