Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal which is a state in the Eastern part of the country. The city is noted for its revolutionary history during the Indian struggle for independence .
It is the third most populous city in India. Famous personages - Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first Nobel laureate and composer of India's national anthem, Subhash Chandra Bose, prominent freedom fighter in the Indian independence movement against the British Raj- are from West Bengal. The official language is Bengali.
